Bruce Springsteen Returns to Road After Illness: Set List, Videos

Bruce Springsteen rolled back into action in Spain Wednesday night after being forced to postpone some dates on his current European tour.

The boss thanked fans last week for partying without him after he had to return home under doctor’s orders. But he appeared to be in fine health as he delivered a 30-song set at the Estadio Metropolitano in Madrid, with assistance from the E Street Band.

Among those songs was “Frankie Fell In Love” from his 2014 solo album High Hopes. It’s a track he’s only played 10 times live in total. Only five of those times were with the E Street Band, with those performances all in the year of the song’s release.

His cover of John Fogerty’s “Rockin’ All Over The World” was another tour debut, making its first appearance since 2016. Videos and a full set list can be seen below.

Springsteen plays two more shows in Madrid, on June 14 and 17, with the European area run ending in London, U.K., on July 27. North American dates commence in Pittsburgh on Aug. 15. The latest currently-scheduled date is in Italy on July 3, 2025.

Geezer Butler Details the Shock Black Sabbath Felt Watching Kiss

Geezer Butler says he and his Black Sabbath bandmates felt a sense of shock when they watched Kiss for the first time.

It was 1975 and Gene Simmons and company were out opening for Sabbath on their U.S. tour. During a recent conversation with Rock Cellar, Butler admitted his band was taken aback by the theatrics of their opener.

“Kiss was the first band that ever used stage production,” the bassist explained. “Up until Kiss came, bands like Black Sabbath used to just go on and plug in and play. Kiss was the first one to use pyro. You’ve never seen that. I mean, the shock of that. And they were supporting us, so they weren’t even headlining.”

Butler further noted what it was like to see Kiss’ fiery antics.

“I went out and watched them. There were all these flames coming out the stage and everything,” he recalled. “It was like, ‘Oh, my God, what’s going on here?’”

‘What the Hell Just Happened?’

While fans were undoubtedly impressed by Kiss’ stage production, Black Sabbath couldn’t help but feel outshined.

“It was tough to follow them,” Butler confessed. “We went on just as an ordinary band, no effects or anything, and everybody else still had their mouths wide open from seeing Kiss. We were like, ‘What the hell just happened?’”

“It was impossible to follow Kiss after the production,” Butler continued. “When I watched them play, I didn’t even listen to the music. I was just astounded by the stage production.”

According to Butler, Kiss’ influence pushed concerts in “a completely new direction,” as “people had to start thinking about stage production.” He and Black Sabbath also learned a valuable lesson: “We made sure that we never had Kiss supporting us again.”

Listen to Yes Co-Founder Jon Anderson’s New Single, ‘Shine On’

Jon Anderson has released the first single with a group of collaborators he found on YouTube. Listen to “Shine On” with the Band of Geeks below.

The new track was produced by Anderson and Blue Oyster Cult‘s Richie Castellano, who also serves as bass player and musical director of the Band of Geeks.

“I can’t even wrap my head around all this,” Castellano told Rolling Stone. “I used to go watch Jon in concert and scream at him. Getting to do something like this is just a dream. It’s also been an opportunity as a Yes fan to go, ‘OK, we’ve been handed the keys to the kingdom. We have Jon Anderson singing for us. How do we want this to go?'”

READ MORE: Ranking Every Yes Album

They’ve been touring together for a few years, sharing classic Yes songs. True, set for release on Aug. 23 by Frontiers Records, will be the first album of originals. Preorder the LP here.

Anderson discovered Castellano’s side project in the summer of 2018 after they posted a cover of Yes’ 1972 epic “Close to the Edge” on their YouTube channel. The title, “Close to the Edge: A Band Geek Yes Cover with Chris Clark,” would eventually inspire the new group’s name.

Soon, Anderson was touring with Band of Geeks, which also includes keyboardists Clark and Andy Ascolese, bassist Andy Graziano, guitarist Robert Kipp. “It felt really exciting,” Anderson added. “I remember thinking, ‘I don’t believe what’s happening! Everyone is just amazing. Let’s go around the world!'”

They’ve now put the finishing touches on nine new songs. The video for “Shine On” was filmed in New Jersey before the start of their latest U.S. tour, dubbed Yes: Epics, Classics and More. “Shine On” has now been added to their regular setlist. Dates continue through September and can also be found below.

Was David Lee Roth’s Solo Band a Bid to Kick Van Halen’s Ass?

Michael Anthony admitted to suspecting that David Lee Roth had revenge motives in forming his solo band after leaving Van Halen.

The bassist said he’d been impressed when he heard tracks from Roth’s 1986 release Eat ‘Em And Smile, which arrived around the same time as Van Halen’s 5150 – their first with new singer Sammy Hagar.

“That’s a great album,” Anthony told Ultimate Guitar in a recent interview. “I’m friends with Billy [Sheehan]. And Steve [Vai]. Obviously, they’re both great frickin’ players.”

READ MORE: Van Halen’s ‘5150’ vs. David Lee Roth’s ‘Eat ‘Em and Smile’

He continued: “At first my thoughts were, ‘Is Dave just trying to put together a band to try to kick our ass? To try to put together the best players that he could get?’ Because obviously, between Greg [Bissonette] and Steve and Billy… you got some great musicianship.”

He reflected: “The playing was great on that album. Those guys are all great. And on top of that, it was just Dave being Dave.”

In the same interview, Anthony was asked to compare the qualities of Roth and Hagar. “Dave… read books, magazines, everything under the sun,” he replied. “[L]yrics and stuff like that… that’s all he was really about.

Michael Anthony on What Sammy Hagar Brought to Van Halen

“When Sammy joined the band… being a guitar player, his knowledge of chord structure and stuff like that brought a different element to Van Halen. Because where Dave focused mainly on his lyrics and trying to do a melody for that, Sammy would be like, ‘Well, what if we try this chord or try this progression?’”

Anthony noted: “Sammy sings how he sings, Dave sings how he sings. But I really enjoyed how Sammy brought that other musical element to the band.”

Top 15 Rock Albums of 2024 (So Far)

Every time it seems like rock music is (again) down for the count, it bounces back up with new life and renewed force to prove that, yep, it’s still here. And as the below list of the Top 15 Rock Albums of 2024 (So Far) shows, it’s been a pretty great six months for the genre.

Among the albums highlighted below, which were chosen by the UCR staff, are veterans of the field returning from hiatuses, reboots and reunions; artists who came of age over the past 25 years finding renewed purpose; and even a band that released its first album after the pandemic.

They all have one thing in common: They’re finding something to say in the most traditional, rock ‘n’ roll way possible: with guitars, devotion and occasional volume. The best albums of 2024 don’t always have direct links to the past, but it’s always there, looking over the shoulder and nudging them along.

READ MORE: Reviews of 2024’s Best Albums

The greatest rock music of these past months doesn’t necessarily reveal itself so easily – but make no mistake, plenty of the below records waste little time with subtleties. But don’t judge these albums by their covers: More than one of these LPs comes out swinging with their questionable cover art. But it’s inside that counts, and that’s where these 15 albums deliver.

So even if you think you know the artists behind these records, or maybe even a song or two from their recent work, don’t underestimate what they’re capable of in 2024. Once again, reports of rock music’s death have been greatly exaggerated.

Hear Def Leppard and Tom Morello’s New Song, ‘Just Like ‘73′

Def Leppard has released “Just Like ‘73,” a surprise collaboration with guitarist Tom Morello. You can listen to the new song below.

According to Morello, he’s a longtime fan of the Sheffield hard rock legends. “I played ‘Rock of Ages’ in my college cover band nearly 40 years ago,” he shared in a press release. The Rage Against the Machine guitarist takes the lead on the guitar solo, using his distinctive whammy bar to further enhance the vintage vibes of “Just Like ‘73.”

As the title suggests, Def Leppard had their own early days as music fans in mind as they were working on the new music. “When I saw David Bowie on TV between 1972 and 1973, everything I thought I knew about music went from black and white to vivid Technicolor,” guitarist Phil Collen said. “‘Just Like ‘73’ represents that awakening.”

The band used a retro approach on social media to tease the arrival of “Just Like ‘73, announcing a “hotline” fans could call to hear a snippet of the new song. It marks their first new original music since 2022’s Diamond Star Halos. During a conversation earlier this year, Collen shared that they take their writing process very seriously. “It’s never been about [writing] 30 songs and [let’s] choose the best 10 or whatever,” he told UCR. “It was always, let’s write 10 great songs.”

Will Fans Hear ‘Just Like ‘73’ Live?

Def Leppard is reportedly preparing to shake up the set list for their summer tour with Journey and Steve Miller Band. Bassist Rick Savage teased in an April Instagram post that fans can expect a “brand new song” and also, a “few more” tracks from Pyromania as they continue to belatedly celebrate its 40th anniversary. “In fact, for those who care, we’ll be rehearsing a song we’ve never played live before, to throw into the mix,” he added.

Featured are the vocals of two-time Austin Texas Music Hall of Famer Jason McMaster (Watchtower, Broken Teeth Dangerous Toys), the rhythm bass of Don Van Stavern (Riot, S.A.Slayer), drummer, Shakes West (Murderdolls, Wednesday 13, Neurotica, Sebastian Bach), and to complete the wickedness, the speed-picking, twin axe attack of guitarists T.C. Connally (PB/DC, Cult to Follow) and John Valenzuela (PB/DC, Urial, Mortician).
Evil United instantly delivers what hard cores expect and demand from the Lone Star state: Intricate, heavy pounding rhythms, swift screeching guitar solos, and over-the-top power-screaming vocals. It is very important to understand that this video was recorded 100% live. It is unedited and was never meant as a legitimate release. Also it is special to me in the fact that the guys in Lillian Axe braved traveling in terrible February ice rain storms to do this show for us. This was my birthday party show and it meant the world to me!! There was two inches of ice everywhere and it certainly affected turnout but those that were there were treated to an amazing evening of music!

I want to thank Steve Blaze and Lillian Axe for allowing me to share this with you!

25 ’80s Movie Sequels That Shouldn’t Have Been Made

Meatballs Part II was released on July 27, 1984, by TriStar Pictures. Unlike its predecessor, the film received harshly negative reviews and a paltry return at the box office. The New York Times said the sequel suffered from “Pallid writing, awkward acting, familiar situations and tired jokes.”

The original Meatballs gave Bill Murray his first leading role in a motion picture. The actor’s comedic charm, coupled with the contributions of screenwriter Harold Ramis and director Ivan Reitman, turned the low-budget comedy into a bona fide hit. None of the aforementioned trio returned for Meatballs Part II, which featured a new star, writer and director in their stead.

These issues were emblematic of those that plagued many ‘80s sequels. Throughout the decade, a long list of films looked to capitalize on the success of their precursors only to fall flat. Common stumbles included a similar lack of returning stars, plot problems and a gross miscalculation of audience demand. In some cases, they endured all three.

Still, studio executives saw sequels as a chance to cash in on already established brands. Even as these follow-up films consistently faltered, producers continued writing checks.

UCR assembled a list of 25 ‘80s sequels that should not have been made. To be included, a film had to fall significantly short of expectations established by its predecessor. We also limited our scope to movies released within the decade, meaning classic bombs like Weekend at Bernie’s II (1993) will have to wait for another list.

Movie Popcorn Bucket Mania: 2024’s Wildest Designs

Ordering popcorn at the movie theater has gotten a lot more interesting – and much more expensive – in recent years.

As movie studios and theaters scramble to generate more income in the face of declining box office revenue, they’ve turned to merchandising. The simple paper buckets of the past have been upstaged by highly detailed plastic and tin works of art featuring characters or props from Hollywood’s latest blockbusters. They can sell for anywhere from $10 to $25 dollars, creating an irresistible new revenue opportunity for the struggling industry.

You can see a gallery of 2024’s best popcorn bucket designs below.

The already popular trend kicked into a much higher gear earlier this year with the debut of the instantly infamous Dune: Part Two sandworm popcorn bucket. As impossible as it seems the designers insist they didn’t realize the bucket, which looks a lot like a sex toy, would set the internet n on fire with NSFW jokes such as “I’m just here to fuck the popcorn bucket” and “extra butter, no popcorn.”

“You don’t know what the internet is going to latch on to and how they’re going to latch on to it,” Marcus Gonzalez, global creative director of Zinc Group, which designed the Dune: Part Two bucket, told Polygon. The bucket sold out almost instantly and still sells on eBay for at least three times its original price.

Things have only gotten more out of hand since then, with Deadpool & Wolverine attempting to outdo Dune: Part Two with its own suggestive popcorn bucket nearly two months ahead of its July release date, and Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire unveiling five completely different designs. Your move, Despicable Me 4

Mike Campbell Finds His Voice on New Dirty Knobs LP: Interview

Mike Campbell has been making records since the ’70s, most famously as a member of Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers.

“I’m grateful that I was part of that whole experience,” Campbell recently told UCR, speaking to his Heartbreaker days. It’s been a full decade since the band released their last album, 2014’s Hypnotic Eye, and six and a half years since Petty’s passing, which effectively ended the Heartbreakers.

Campbell describes himself as “still grieving,” but tries not to spend too much time dwelling. “If I think about it too hard, I’ll just get sad,” he says. In the past four years, he’s kept himself busy with new work, recording and performing with his band the Dirty Knobs. As Campbell sees it, their third album, Vagabonds, Virgins & Misfits (out June 14 via BMG), marks “huge growth” for him both lyrically and vocally. After years of operating as Petty’s right-hand man and usually taking the backseat when it came to singing — Campbell sang lead on exactly one Heartbreakers song, “I Don’t Wanna Fight” from 1999’s Echo — it’s taken three albums worth of work to reach a place where he feels self-assured of his ability to front a band. “A lot of it is confidence,” he says.

UCR caught up with Campbell and talked about Vagabonds, Virgins & Misfits, including its various guest stars.

This is your third album with the Dirty Knobs, but obviously you’ve been in this business a long time. How would you say your approach to songwriting has changed from your early days to this new album?
Well, my approach to songwriting is the same as it’s ever been. Except when I was partnered with Tom, I mostly just did music. I would make music tracks and give them to him and if he liked it, he would write the words. Now that he’s gone, I have my own band, I’m exploring the lyrics and the characters, as well as the music. So that’s a new frontier, but I’m really taking to it and I’m just trying to get good at it, you know? I see a huge growth in three albums. This new album, I think, has some really good lyrics, and the band, as always. And just, you know, the music is just — it’s always there. I write all the time, you know, and that hasn’t waned at all.

I would like to mention though, just to carry on what you said before about the female’s perspective. (This writer spoke with Campbell previously about another upcoming album, Petty Country: A Country Music Celebration of Tom Petty.) One thing on this album that I love, which was an afterthought, was Lucinda Williams’ addition of her words in the song “Hell or High Water.” [I] cut it as a Dirty Knobs song, and then listening back, it occurred to me and George Drakoulias, the producer: Wouldn’t it be great if this female character in the song actually came in and sang on the song? When I thought of Lucinda, I thought, God, if she would do it, that would be perfect. And she came through with flying colors, she put so much heart and soul into that verse. So there’s an example [of a] song from a woman’s perspective adding much more depth to the song.

Totally. It would have been an entirely different track without that. It’s great that you have these contacts at your disposal that you can call up.
The guests on the record were not me going out and cherry-picking people. They’re just people who seemed to show up. Like Graham Nash, who did an incredible job. He was doing an interview with me and I got up the courage to ask him if he would maybe sing on one song (“Dare to Dream”), which he did. Chris Stapleton I think was in town that weekend getting a Grammy or something and he came by the house. Here, would you sing on this song? And [Benmont Tench came over] and put piano on it, you know. So the guests were kind of afterthoughts, but in each case, they made the song way better.

Listen to Graham Nash Guest on Mike Campbell and the Dirty Knobs’ ‘Dare to Dream’

Did Graham record his parts remotely or did he also come by your studio? I know he lives in New York and you’re in L.A.
No, I had already cut the song. It was finished. And I did the interview with him, and you know, I’m a huge Hollies fan, the ’60s, all those bands. So just being able to have a conversation with him was wonderful. And I was really kind of sheepish like, I didn’t think he would say yes. … I said “Would you be interested maybe in trying to sing on something?” And he goes, “Sure, I’ll make your song better.” [Laughs] So I had the track. He went back to New York. I sent him the track, as a lot of people do now, he did his vocals and mailed it back to me and I lost my mind. It was so good.

There were several tracks on this album that when I heard them, I thought “Wow, Mike’s voice sounds great.” You’ve really grown into your role as lead singer, from the first Dirty Knobs album (2020’s Wreckless Abandon) to this one. How do you feel about your singing now?
Wow, can I send you some flowers? [Laughs] I thank you for saying that. I’m getting used to it, you know? And I have a little Florida slang that comes through now and then. But I don’t sound like Tom. When I first started singing…I actually did sound a lot like him because we talk a lot the same and stuff. But I think I’ve worked hard to kind of filter that out through the three albums, and there will always be little bit of that Southern thing in there. I think I found a voice that I’m comfortable with. I’m not a Roy Orbison, [but] I have the personality of certain characters that I put across. And a lot of it is confidence, Allison. If you get confident and work on the voice a little bit and believe that you pulled it off, you know, that’s a lot of the game right there. So my confidence has grown as I keep working on it. But thank you for that compliment, that was wonderful.

And that goes for live shows, too. I would imagine that you also feel some confidence when you’re up in front of a crowd that’s encouraging you.
Oh, yeah. You know, it’s interesting, because I play with the Dirty Knobs, it’s our songs, it’s our trip, but I’m still a member of this legacy. And I sometimes will do a few Heartbreakers songs just out of respect for Tom because the crowd likes them and I like singing some of them. But the crowd, yeah. When they’re there for you and supporting you…I get the sense that a lot of the people in the audience that know me and my years are pulling for me. … I’m trying to find my own way and they’re supporting me and they’re helping me get there.

Speaking of singing, your wife, Marcie, sings some backing vocals on the song “Hands Are Tied.” Is that the first time she’s done that on one of your albums?
That’s a funny story. Because, you know, she usually sings around the house. She’s not a singer per se, but all through my life — you know, I’ll be doing a demo and I’ll say “Why don’t you come in and put a little part on this?” “No, no, no, I don’t sing.” On this album…she goes, “You know what? I think I’d like to sing on this one.” And I said “Really?” I was in shock. I said “Okay, well, we got this song. All you got to do is go ahhhhh.” [Laughs] And her sound and her feel on it really helped the song a lot.

You have a note in your credits thanking Stevie Nicks for the “cool dulcimer.” And you’re actually holding the instrument on the cover of the album. Can you tell me about that?
Yeah, I hope she sees the cover, ’cause I think she will appreciate it. There’s a story with that. When I was doing the Mac project we were at rehearsal one day, and Mick Fleetwood came in with one of those customized dulcimers, just beautiful. And I was talking to him about it and saying “Oh, this is really a nice instrument.” I guess she overheard the conversation and a week later, I walk in and she says “Here, this is for you.” She went and bought one just like it for me. I was blown away. In fact, I even wrote the song — “Innocent Man” was written on that dulcimer, on the album. But the funny thing is, I took it home and played it — it’s in my studio — and then a couple of weeks later, she came up, she said, “You probably never even play it, do you?” [Laughs] I said “I play it all the time!” You know, that’s so Stevie. So I hope that she sees the cover and knows that I covered it and used it.

You’ve had a number of full circle moments, so to speak, in the last few years. I’m thinking of your time touring with Fleetwood Mac and reconnecting with Stevie Nicks, or playing with Bob Dylan at Farm Aid last year. You also shot the “Dare to Dream” music video with the Dirty Knobs at the Church Studio in Tulsa, Oklahoma, which was where the Heartbreakers signed their very first record deal. Is there anything else along those lines you’d like to do? Anything you want to revisit?
Well, I enjoyed the Tulsa thing quite a bit. That was not my idea, but the idea came up [from] management. And I thought it was very touching to go back where Tom and I had passed through on the way to get a record deal and to revisit that energy and those ghosts in the studio there. I enjoyed that a lot. But to be honest with you, I’d rather like, think forward and not think backward because sometimes nostalgia can be sad, you know? I’m real proud of that video, though. But I think I want to move forward and think forward.

Speaking of blasts from the past: The Wallflowers are going to be playing a show in L.A. later this year and the plan is for them to perform the entirety of their album Bringing Down the Horse, which you played on, and also the entirety of the Heartbreakers’ Long After Dark. What do you think about that?
You know, it’s wonderful that people are pulling out this music and revisiting it, you know, and I love Dylan — Jakob Dylan. I played on their first single, “Sixth Avenue [Heartache],” which was really fun and I’ve always been proud of his career. And I think he’s taken on a lot to do all those songs in one set, but more power to him. I’m sure he’ll do a great job.

What are you most looking forward to about touring with this new Knobs music?
I’m thrilled beyond to go out on the road with my band and play the new album. I’m real proud of it and the songs sound great in rehearsal. And the show will be a lot of the new album, and I’ll be throwing in a couple of surprise Heartbreaker songs that I think people will like here and there.

Styx Is ‘Powerless’ Regarding Rock Hall Consideration

Tommy Shaw admits his band Styx is frustratingly helpless when it comes to consideration for the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame.

“We’re really powerless over it,” the rocker noted during a recent conversation with Billboard. “We don’t have any influence whatsoever. So to be anticipating it or be disappointed that we’re not in there… I don’t even know who the people are who judge (the Rock Hall), so I can’t really say much about it.”

Each year, the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame’s nominating committee decides which acts will appear on the annual ballot. More than 1000 historian, musicians and members of the music industry then cast their votes. Styx’s rock resume is certainly formidable. The band has sold more than 54 million albums, including a run of five consecutive multi-platinum releases in the ‘70s and early ‘80s. Though they’ve been eligible for induction since 1998, the band has never so much as received a nomination.

“If that thing’s meant to happen, it will,” Shaw remarked regarding his band’s chances at induction. “We just know that our fans love us and we know that our music is good before we let them hear it.”

Styx Will Tour This Summer With Recent Hall of Fame Inductee Foreigner

Perhaps Styx can feel better about their Hall chances by looking at Foreigner. After strangely being ignored for decades — allegedly due to bad blood with former Hall head Jann Wenner — the band will finally be inducted later this year. Coincidentally, Styx will be on tour this summer with Foreigner, and Shaw couldn’t be happier about his tourmates upcoming enshrinement.

“It’s fantastic,” the rocker declared. “You like to see your friends get in. [Peter] Frampton this year, too.”
